Sudbury to celebrate World Autism Awareness Day

To celebrate World Autism Awareness Day on April 2, 2015, the Autism Ontario Sudbury and District Chapter will raise a special flag at Tom Davies Square.

To celebrate World Autism Awareness Day on April 2, 2015, the Autism Ontario Sudbury and District Chapter will raise a special flag at Tom Davies Square.

Sudbury Mayor Brian Bigger will make an official proclamation to commemorate World Autism Awareness Day, at the ceremony which starts at 10:30 a.m.

Autism spectrum disorder is a complex developmental disability that typically appears in the first three years of life and impacts the typical development of the brain in the areas of social interactions and communication skills. An estimated one in 94 Canadian children are affected by autism spectrum disorder and require daily support.

Since 2008, the United Nations has officially recognized World Autism Awareness Day on April 2. In 2013, Autism Ontario began participating in flag-raising ceremonies that occurred in more than 300 Ontario communities and raised more 500 flags in support of autism awareness.

The evening of April 2 Autism Ontario's Sudbury and District Chapter will also host its third annual World Autism Awareness Day dinner at the Caruso Club.

Ticket are $20 for non-member adults, $10 for adult members, $10 per child for a non-member, and $5 per child for a member. The cost covers a buffet dinner of meatballs, penne pasta, Caesar and garden salads and dinner rolls.
