Downtown Sudbury businesses were competing Thursday morning to sell as many daffodil pins as possible, to support the Canadian Cancer Society's Daffodil Month campaign.

Employees with the Royal Bank of Canada, the Bank of Montreal and TD Bank were at their respective corners – at the intersection of Durham and Cedar streets – to convince as many passersby as possible to purchase yellow daffodil pins.

Cathy Keaney-Burns, the Canadian Cancer Society's community manager in Sudbury, said all proceeds from the pins go towards cancer research and help support local programs.

In 2013, the program provided more than 7,500 rides to 367 members of the community so they could make it to doctors' appointments and cancer treatments.

Funds from the Daffodil Month campaign will also support the cancer society's local peer support program, that connected 20 cancer patients and caregivers with volunteers who have lived through similar experiences in 2013.

In addition to the daffodil pin campaign, more than 40 businesses in downtown Sudbury will decorate their storefronts in yellow to raise awareness about the campaign.

β€œIt's a great way to kick off spring, bring some colour downtown and join a good cause at the same time,” said Downtown Sudbury chair Jeff McIntyre.

From April 9 until April 23, Loblaw Companies Limited will sell fresh daffodils, and donate $2 from every purchase to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Sudbury's Independent grocery stores will participate in the campaign.
