The Greater Sudbury Police Services, the City of Greater Sudbury Emergency Services, and Collège Boréal held a mock disaster training exercise at its main campus on April 16.

The goal of this biannual event is to allow Paramedic Students to put their knowledge into practice and test their skills in the context of a staged emergency situation. Students from four area high schools enrolled in the Health and Wellness Specialist High Skills Major program also participatedin the simulation. In total, approximately one hundred participants took part in the large-scale exercise.

Our favourite eye in the sky Drone Malone captured the simulation and created a PSA reminding us the importance of paying attention while driving.

The scenario begins with a group of young adults travelling in a car at high speed. While texting at the wheel, the driver loses control of the vehicle near a busy bus stop and strikes several pedestrians.

Collège Boréal students enrolled in the Paramedics program were put to the test as they respond to the scene, take part in patient triage, and assist in crisis management. Their ability to work under pressure and communicate effectively was also assessed.

A debriefing exercise following the mock disaster allows participants to discuss the accident and emergency response techniques. The recap also allows students to work through emotional issues potentially triggered by traumatic events.
