Phoenix mural paints picture of potential at YMCA

YMCA and Cambrian College share the same basic purpose — to help people realize their true potential.

And “potential” is the theme students from the college chose for a mural to decorate the halls of YMCA. They selected a radiating phoenix bursting from the ashes to best portray that image.

A number of students from the arts and designs fundamentals program and graphic design program were responsible for the mural.

“Hopefully, this will inspire those who walk through these halls,” said Johanna Westby, professor for Cambrian's arts and designs program.

This is the fourth community mural designed by Cambrian students.

“The projects get bigger and bigger every year,” she said. “It's a key essence of Cambrian College, and a valuable experience for everyone involved.”

Students started the mural in November, and it took plenty of dedication from the already-busy students.

“One of us put 30 hours into it,” said Lindsay Levesque, one of the young artists. “She is a mom of two girls. I have no idea how she did it.”
