Maison Vale Hospice holds its 2015 RBC Hike for Hospice Palliative Care starting at 11 a.m. May 3 at the Grace Hartman Amphitheatre.

Besides the main event — the walk itself — the event includes musical entertainment and a barbecue. A pipe band will kick off the walk.

Last year, the event raised about $150,000 for the hospice, and included about 1,000 participants.

These funds are crucial, as the province only covers 56 per cent of the hospice's operating costs, said hospice executive director Léo Therrien. He said the Sudbury community raised about $1 million last year through various fundraisers.

Students at Churchill Public School held their own Hike for Hospice walk today near the school.

To enhance their fundraising efforts, Churchill held a variety of dress-up theme days throughout the year, a volleyball tournament and a Boston Pizza Night.

The school raised $12,000 for the cause last year, and their goal this year is $12,002. They'll release their fundraising total Monday with the help of Olympic curler Brad Jacobs.

“We're really amazed with what Churchill does for us,” Therrien said.
