Sudbury's New Democrats now have two people running to be the party's candidate in the upcoming federal election, but still no date for a nomination meeting.

Stephanie Harris, chair of the International Women's Week Committee and the Women and HIV Community Development Coordinator with Reseau ACCESS Network, has entered the race.

Harris will hold a meet-and-greet event Sunday from 1-3 p.m. at 96 Fourth Ave. in Sudbury.

She joins Paul Loewenberg, operations manager at the Laughing Buddha and The Townehouse Tavern, in running to represent the NDP as it seeks to win the seat in Sudbury.  Loewenberg will also hold a meet-and-greet, Saturday, May 9 at 2 p.m. at The Townehouse.

Harris and Loewenberg are vying for the federal seat in Sudbury, which has been vacant since January. That's when former NDP MP Glenn Thibeault resigned to run for the provincial Liberals in
the February byelection.

Sudbury riding association president Richard Eberhardt said there's still time for people to join the party and vote at the nomination meeting. Memberships must be purchased 30 days before the meeting is held.

“The earlier the better,” Eberhardt said, when asked when he'd like to see the meeting called.

While the seat in Sudbury is vacant, it's expected that rather than a byelection, Prime Minister Stephen Harper will roll the Sudbury vote and Peterborough – another vacant seat – into the federal election slated for October.

The winner of the NDP nomination will face Conservative Fred Slade, Green David Robinson and Liberal Paul Lefebvre, who have all been nominated for their respective parties for the fall vote.
