Board promises 'fun' math for Education Week

The Rainbow District School Board marks Education Week May 4-8 with a variety of activities. 


“Education week provides a wonderful opportunity to celebrate teaching excellence, student achievement, parental involvement and exceptional community support in Rainbow Schools,” said Norm Blaseg, director of education for Rainbow District School Board.

This year’s theme is “Achieving Excellence: Moving Forward in Math.”

 

A.B. Ellis Public School

On May 4, at 9:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., new Early Learning - Kindergarten students as well as parents/guardians will have the opportunity to engage in Kindergarten orientation activities at A.B. Ellis Public School. This event is open to the public.

On May 5, parents are invited to visit the school to enjoy some math games in the school library from 11:25 a.m. to 1:25 p.m. Students will take part in the Terry Fox run on Wednesday, May 6 starting at 9 a.m. The school will also host the Scholastic Book Fair on Thursday, May 7 and Friday, May 8.

 

Adamsdale Public School

Students, staff and guests will enjoy a special talent show and Music Monday event on May 4 at 9:30 a.m. in the school gym. Grade 1 to 6 students will perform dance routines, pop songs and a variety of instrumental selections. The school choir will sing “We Are One” at 11 a.m.

Adamsdale Public School will transform into a math wonderland for the first ever Math Day on May 5. Students will explore numerous math concepts as they complete various activities throughout the school. New Early Learning - Kindergarten students as well as parents/guardians are invited to an orientation/registration session at 4 a.m. This event is open to the public.

The Grade 1, Grade 2/3 and ISP classes will visit Science North on May 8 to investigate plants and bugs and to participate in science related activities. Students in Grades 5 and 6 will attend the Rainbow District School Board Heritage Fair at Laurentian University.

 

Alexander Public School

Alexander Public School will kick off Education Week with Music Monday on May 4.

Algerian-born French author, Naima Oukerfellah, will visit with students to discuss her new book Ici, c'est different de la-bas. Her book tells the story of an 11-year-old boy, Souad, who travels to Montreal and records his journey of the upheavals related to immigration. Naima will visit Grade 7 students on Tuesday, May 5, Grade 6 students on May 6 and Grade 5 students on Thursday, May 7, starting at 9 a.m. Teachers will receive a copy of Naima's book.

On May 7 at 5 p.m., parents/guardians and new Early Learning - Kindergarten students are invited to an orientation session at the school. This event is open to the public.

Throughout the week, students will participate in a number of learning activities. Parents/guardians are asked to visit classroom websites for activity dates and times.

 

Assiginack Public School

On May 4, students will engage in meaningful math with manipulatives and hands on learning opportunities. New Early Learning - Kindergarten students along with parents/guardians are invited to a kindergarten orientation/registration session from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. This event is open to the public.

Assiginack Public School’s soccer teams will travel to Manitoulin Island on May 5 for the junior championships at Pontiac School and the intermediate championships at Central Manitoulin Public School.

SpeakUp grant winners will complete their project ‘Brighter Future, Brighter Life: Preparing students for post secondary’ with a Career Fair on May 6th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the school. Grade 7 and 8 students from other Island schools will be in attendance.

On May 7, Grade 7 and 8 students will host a Mexican Fiesta community dinner and silent auction to raise funds for their school trip. New Early Learning - Kindergarten students along with parents/guardians are invited to a second kindergarten orientation/registration session from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. This event is open to the public.

To help foster a love of mathematics, students will focus on fun and game in math on May 8.

 

Central Manitoulin Public School

Central Manitoulin Public School will host the intermediate Island soccer tournament on May 5.

Staff and students will take part in the Scholastic Book Fair on May 5 and May 6.

A Kindergarten orientation/registration session will take place on May 7 from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. for new Early Learning - Kindergarten students as well as parents/guardians. This event is open to the public.

Students will engage in educational activities during Math Game Day on May 8.

 

Charles C. McLean Public School

Students from Charles C. McLean Public School will visit Lakeview School on May 6, for a special performance of Sleeping Beauty, while Grade 8 students will attend a Career Fair at Assiginack Public School. New Early Learning - Kindergarten students as well as parents/guardians are invited to a Kindergarten orientation/registration session at 6 p.m. This event is open to the public.

On May 7, staff from Hydro One will discuss safety with staff and students.

On May 8, all classes will practice math games for one hour, to help foster a love for the subject.

 

Chelmsford Public School

At 11:30 a.m. on May 5, parents/guardians are welcome to join their children in the classroom for math and numeracy education. Students will explore math manipulatives, mental math, and family friendly math games.

On May 6, new Early Learning - Kindergarten students and parents/guardians are invited to the school for an orientation session from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. This event is open to the public. At 11:30 a.m. and 6 p.m., parents/guardians are invited to the school’s annual talent show.

Students will showcase performances on Friday, May 8th in preparation for Rainbow District School Board’s Concours Franco Rainbow French lip-sync contest, taking place at the end of May.

 

Larchwood Public School

In celebration of Music Monday, Larchwood Public School students will participate in "math in music" on May 4.
On May 5, students will explore 21st century learning in math on iPads with T cubed (Techno Tuesday Team.) New Early Learning - Kindergarten students and parents/guardians are invited to attend a Kindergarten orientation session from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Students will engage in manipulative math on May 6th. Connections between the arts and other subjects will be the theme of the Larchwood Talent Show on May 7 starting at 1:35 p.m. All classrooms will explore math games on May 8.

Throughout the week, a book fair will take place in support of classroom libraries. School spirit gear will also be for sale.

 

MacLeod Public School

On May 4, all classes and music groups will participate in a Music Monday concert. In an effort to promote literacy and recycling, MacLeod Public School will host their annual book swap on May 6.

Parents/guardians are invited to celebrate learning with their children through various math activities for Education Week. Families are also encouraged to participate in MacLeod Math Challenges at home. Solutions that are submitted will earn families a chance to win a math game.

 

Monetville Public School

On May 4 at 5 p.m., Monetville Public School will welcome new Early Learning – Kindergarten students and parents/guardians for an orientation/registration session. This event is open to the public.

On May 5, Grade 4 students will participate in “Swim to Survive,” a program designed to teach survival skills for the water.

Monetville Public School will showcase student talent with Monetville Idol on May 8.

 

Pinecrest Public School

Pinecrest Public School students will have the opportunity to sharpen their math skills with games and hands on activities during Education Week. The junior division will work with the school’s mathematics consultant to play math games designed to enhance student learning. Students will develop a better understanding of equivalent fractions and the value of visualizing written information.

Intermediate students will participate in the Math Olympics, which will focus on each of the five strands of math through exciting hands on activities. Students will be asked to communicate their understanding of concepts and expectations within the Provincial curriculum.

 

Redwood Acres Public School

Staff and students at Redwood Acres Public School will enjoy a Music Monday assembly on May 4 at 11:30 a.m. Students will also engage in fun math activities with Making Math Meaningful with Manipulatives.

On May 5, students will work with math toolkits. At 5:30 p.m., new Early Learning - Kindergarten students and parents/guardians are invited to a Kindergarten orientation/registration session. This event is open to the public.

Students will participate in Walkabout Wednesday - Math is Everywhere! on May 6.

Parents/guardians are invited to participate in Redwood Acres Public School’s Thinking About Technology & 21st Century Teaching & Learning workshops from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on May 7. Students will enjoy fun and games in math on May 8.

 

Walden Public School

The Primary Choir, Glee Club and several classes will perform a Music Monday concert on May 4 starting at 11:45 a.m. in the school gym. Four university placement students from Finland will visit classrooms to teach traditional Finnish songs to students.

On May 5, Walden Public School will host an orientation session for new Early Learning - Kindergarten students and parents/guardians at 5:30 p.m. This event is open to the public.

On May 6 at 6 p.m., parents/guardians are invited to attend the school’s Parent Literacy Night: Are You Smarter than A Walden Public School student?

Students and staff will take part in the Jump Rope for Heart kick-off assembly on May 7.

On May 8, Grade 4/5 students will enjoy a special visit from Ellen Gorecki, a watercolour artist from Lively. Ellen will work with students to develop inspirational spring art including flowers and butterflies using items found in the classroom.

 

Westmount Public School

Westmount Public School students will participate in various activities during Education Week. Kindergarten students will practice numeracy by growing plants and measuring their progress on a daily basis. They will also use addition and subtraction through objects, fingers, mental images, drawings, acting out situations, and verbal explanations.

Other students will identify Canadian money and will use addition to choose the proper currency to purchase items. Students in Grades 1 and 2 will continue to develop their math skills by focusing on probability math games and will then share these games with their parents.

On May 5 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., new Early Learning - Kindergarten students as well as parents/guardians are invited to a Kindergarten orientation session at the school. This event is open to the public.
