MNR monitoring 11 Greater Sudbury lakes

Eleven lakes in Greater Sudbury will be among the 160 lakes included in the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry's schedule for monitoring fish populations this summer.

Fisheries crews will be also be taking water samples and checking for invasive species.

“If you're on a lake that is being monitored and see buoys showing the Ontario logo, please don’t lift the nets or buoys, and avoid recreational activities between and around the buoys,” said a news release. “All nets will be clearly marked.”

During the lake surveys, staff will sample fish to check for abundance, length, weight, age and contaminants; check water temperature, clarity and oxygen levels; look for invasive species such as spiny waterflea and rusty crayfish in some lakes.

Information gathered through these surveys will be used to help make decisions about managing fisheries, including setting seasons and size limits for anglers.

Lakes in Greater Sudbury included in the study are Bigwood, Boumage, Chiniguchi, Deschamps, Helen, Kukagami, Lang, Mozhabong, Pogamasing, Venetian, Wabagishik.

Netting begins May 28.
