Ontario announced this week that it is providing an annual investment of $100,000 to permanently fund a forensic pathology unit in Sault Ste. Marie.

The new lab, located at the Sault Area Hospital, will provide autopsy services for the Algoma District, working closely with regional coroner and police services.

This new unit will be the seventh of its kind in Ontario, but the second for Northern Ontario. Currently, Greater Sudbury houses the only pathology unit in the entire region. Other units are located in Toronto, Ottawa, Kingston, Hamilton and London.

The new permanent unit will enable the same high-quality death investigation services and training for future professionals to be delivered in Algoma District.
