Golfers shave heads for cancer research

Given the cool temperatures Friday morning, Paul Schweyer didn't have much protection from the elements after he got his head shaved to raise money for cancer research at the Idylwylde golf course.

“The temperature dropped about 10 degrees, but it's for a good cause,” he said. “It feels pretty good, actually.”

Schweyer, a golf pro with the Idylwylde Golf & Country Club, and two club members – John Scott and Ron Smith – had their heads shaved to raise funds for the Northern Cancer Foundation.

By the time the three men braved the hair clippers – skillfully wielded by Parallels Hair Design's Britney Heart – they had raised $17,000 for the foundation.

Most of the donations came from club members, Schweyer said.

“We're going to keep going for another week or so and try to hit $20,000,” he added.
The golf pro said his two daughters – who are two and four – were a little shocked to see their dad's new look that morning.

But Friday was not the first time Schweyer has gotten his head shaved for charity.
In 2006, the club held a similar fundraiser to help build a rain shelter on the back nine.

Nine years later, Schweyer said he was left with a bit of a guilty conscience. “I thought maybe I should do a shave for a little more of a worthy cause than a rain shelter at Idylwylde,” he said.

All the funds raised through the event will support cancer research at the Northeast Cancer Centre.

“We couldn’t be happier with this display of bravery and spirit,” said Tannys Laughren, executive director of the Northern Cancer Foundation, in a press release. “Shaving your head for cancer awareness is one thing, but shaving your head and bringing in thousands of dollars for research is nothing short of incredible. Huge thanks to Paul for putting this together, to John and Ron for taking part and to all the donors for their support.”
