What's open on Canada Day?

The Greater Sudbury Police Service is reminding all retailers to familiarize themselves with the Retail Business Holidays Act. Most retailers are not permitted to be open for business on a “Holiday”, according to the Act.

The Greater Sudbury Police Service is reminding all retailers to familiarize themselves with the Retail Business Holidays Act.

Most retailers are not permitted to be open for business on a “Holiday”, according to the Act.

The Act requires retail businesses to close on nine specified days each year. They are:
  • New Year’s Day (Jan. 1) 
  • Family Day (the third Monday of Feb.) 
  • Good Friday (the Friday before Easter Sunday – typically in Mar. or Apr.) 
  • Easter Sunday (typically in Mar. or Apr.) 
  • Victoria Day (the last Monday before or on May 24) 
  • Canada Day (July 1) 
  • Labour Day (first Monday in Sept) 
  • Thanksgiving Day (the second Monday in Oct.) 
  • Christmas Day (Dec. 25) 

Wednesday July 1st 2015 is Canada Day, and as per the Retail Business Holidays Act, most businesses will be closed.

The Retail Business Holidays Act is administered by the Ministry of Government and Consumer Services and enforced by local police services.

Additionally, The GSPS Collision Reporting Centre will be closed on Wednesday July 1, 2015 (Canada Day) and will be reopening on Thursday July 2, 2015 at 8:00 am.
