Sudbury Catholic District School Board director of education Joanne Benard has released the following statement about car crash victim Travis Lester on behalf of the board:

“It is with great sadness that we found out about the recent tragic death of Grade 11 St. Charles College student Travis Lester as a result of a car accident this past Saturday.

“The chapel at St. Charles College will be open today from 1 to 3 for staff and students who would like to come together in prayer and where grief counselling will be available.

“Our flags will be flying at half mast in honour of Travis and his family. Please join us in extending our prayers and thoughts to Travis, his family and friends, the St. Charles College school community and all those affected by this tremendous loss.

“We ask that you respect the privacy of his family and friends at this time.”

Original story:

The 17-year-old boy who died in a collision on Radar Road in Hanmer June 27 is being identified by other local media as Travis Lester.

The eastbound vehicle driven by Lester crossed the centre line and struck a westbound minivan. Lester succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Greater Sudbury Police say they'll release more information today. According to his obituary, Lester is the son of Sandy Butcher-Lester (Mitch Lemieux) and Scott Lester. He's also survived by his younger sister, Kathryn Lester.

“Travis was a man's man,” the obituary said. “Hardworking, loyal, and always gave 100 per cent. He will be remembered for his love of engines, whether it be his snowmobile, Volkswagen Jetta, or recent Yamaha purchase. Travis will be sadly missed by his friends, teammates, coworkers and classmates.”

Lester's Facebook page lists him as attending St. Charles College and working at Maslack Supply.

Visitation takes place at the Jackson and Barnard Funeral Home June 30 from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m., with parish prayers at 3 p.m.

A funeral mass takes place at St. Andrew the Apostle Church at 10 a.m. July 1. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to the Kathryn Lester Trust Fund.
