Local fundraisers Miners for Cancer donated $5,000 to the Northern Cancer Foundation's brachytherapy program Saturday, June 27.

The donation will help pay for a stepper for ultrasound-guided brachytherapy prostate implants.

Brachytherapy has emerged as an effective and relatively low-cost treatment for certain prostate cancers, resulting in low morbidity, potential convenience of a single-day outpatient procedure and high patient tolerability.

“This equipment will make a radical difference in the treatment of brachytherapy for our prostate cancer patients” said Tannys Laughren, executive director of the Northern Cancer Foundation, in a press release.

“Our cancer centre is a better place because of Miners for Cancer. They are making a difference in cancer outcomes and experiences for our patients. We are so grateful for their support.”

To help with fundraising efforts, Miners for Cancer held its annual softball tournament June 27 at the Rick McDonald Complex in Azilda.

“This is our passion,” said Wayne Tonelli, Miners for Cancer president, in a press release.

“Knowing we can provide tangible help that truly makes a difference to our people in the community who are battling cancer is what drives us to keep raising funds. We will never stop.”
