The outage began shortly after 8:30 a.m. and at the peak, darkened service to about 700 customers the Moonglo subdivision and along Kelly Lake Road. Dynamic Earth was also affected.

The cause was a series of events triggering faults in underground services. Most customers were restored shortly after 1 p.m. but the last affected addresses were re-energized just before 4 p.m.

Updated at 2 p.m.: Powerline electricians have replaced the piece of equipment which had overheated and triggered the outage shortly after 9:15 a.m., but they are now trying to deal with a secondary fault.

Power has been restored to most of the affected area, but Telstar Avenue and Galaxy Court are still dark and will be for a couple more hours, GSU tweeted just after 1:30 p.m.

Update at 10:55 a.m.: Crews are still on site in the Kelly Lake/Moonglo area of Sudbury attempting to restore power to about 500 Greater Sudbury Utilities (GSU) customers.

GSU was replacing a piece of equipment called an "elbow" — which is used to connect two lines together — when the outage occurred. The elbow overheated and the system's automatic safety protocols kicked in to shut down the power.

About 500 customers, including Dynamic Earth, are affected.
