Cyril Varney Public School, Churchill Public School, and Ecole Publique Jean-Éthier-Blais were announced as the winners of the Ugliest Schoolyard Contest 2015.

The contest, presented by VETAC, Greater Sudbury's regreening advisory council judges schools across the city and determines which is in the most need of a makeover.

The winning schools receive a cash donation from Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations (INO), the contest's major corporate sponsor.

In addition, supplies from local businesses will be donated and expert advice will be provided to transform their schoolyards into greener and healthier outdoor environments.

“Play is one of the most important social benefits of green spaces,” said Greater Sudbury Mayor Brian Bigger in a press release.

“When completed, these three schoolyards will allow children to develop their imagination through creative play, and ultimately grow their appreciation and understanding of the natural environment.”

Since 2005, the Ugliest Schoolyard Contest and its sponsors have helped 36 schools create greener and healthier schoolyards.

“We look forward to working with the three winning schools on their playground regreening this summer and fall,” said Wayne Hugli, VETAC member. “With out support these schools will transform their outdoor spaces into more environmentally-friendly areas in which students and teachers can enjoy and explore”.

Project planning has begun at this year's winning schools and the schoolyard transformations will take place this fall.
