A pair of Sudbury sisters handed out more than 60 soccer balls to Centre Communautaire du Grand Sudbury's French soccer league June 23.

Mélanie-Rose Frappier and her sister Darquise, with the help of corporate sponsors Heels N Soles Shoe Repair, Scotiabank, and community members, were able to raise enough money to hand out the sports equipment.

This is the second annual event of its kind. In two years, a total of 150 soccer balls have been distributed.

Frappier, 18, created the program “It's Cool to be Healthy/C`est cool d`etre en santé” in 2013.

She has received many awards for her community work, including a Community Builders Award in the Young Leader category from Northern Life this past winter.

Her 10-year-old sister Darquise created the program “Helping IS Caring” and was one of the top three National Finalists in the Canadian Living Me to We Awards in the Youth under 12 category.

“We have been fortunate to have been able to help children in our community,” said Frappier in an email to NorthernLife.ca. “Helping to keep our community healthy and happy is our goal”.
