Greater Sudbury Utilities (GSU) has again received reports of aggressive door-to-door sales teams canvassing in the area.

As the summer season seems to coincide with a spike in such activity, particularly involving energy contracts, HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioner) and water heater companies, GSU and affiliates Greater Sudbury Hydro, @home Energy and Agilis Networks have a few reminders to help the public protect itself against fraud:

Stop, do not:

-Share personal or financial information
-Show any bills
-Sign or agree to a contract on the spot
-Respond to aggressive sales tactics

Use caution:

-Investigate the person or company
-Review all contracts in detail
-Consult with family and trusted advisers.

Protect yourself:

-Be aware of fraudulent activity in your area
-Get a copy of any agreement in writing
-Verify all claims
-Talk to your current service provider about any cancellation fees you may face.

Trust your instincts. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Don't share Personal Identification (PIN) Numbers or banking info over the phone, with anyone who comes to your door, or with anyone via email unless you initiated the interaction. Don't feel pressured to make a decision quickly. Don't pay for goods or services with cash or money services. Instead, use a payment option that provides protection, such as a credit card.

For any product or service, get a written agreement, including price, all promised goods and services, name and full company contact information including address, phone number, etc., particularly when any significant amount of money, time or service is involved.

Be wary of repeated visits or phone calls to your home. If you feel threatened or harassed, call police immediately.

There are roughly 14,000 complaints of fraudulent activity every year in Canada. If you think someone has attempted to defraud you, don't be embarrassed! Report it to local police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (1-888-495-9171).

“Greater Sudbury Utilities, Greater Sudbury Hydro, @home Energy and Agilis Networks never canvass door to door, and will not ask to see your bill or for your account number,” said a press release. “If we're at your door, it's because you've called to report a problem, or we're advising that we're doing work in the area which may affect your service.

“Report any suspicious people. If you are wondering if the person at your door is working on your service provider's behalf, call that company directly, at the number on your bill.”
