Do you know who your electricity provider is?

Thunderstorm risks are on the rise as the mercury climbs on the thermostat.

As the hottest part of the summer approaches, thunderstorms can pop up quickly, bringing high winds, lightning strikes, hail and torrential rains. Sometimes they cause injury, property damage and power outages.

Greater Sudbury Hydro is urging residents to report power outages when they happen.

The company can only work on restoring power within its service territory, so it's important for Greater Sudbury residents to know who distributes their electricity.

Greater Sudbury Hydro routinely receives calls from people who live outside of the service area, for instance in Val Caron or Lively, trying to report outages.

"Our service territory is really the old City of Sudbury, Copper Cliff, Coniston, Capreol and Falconbridge, as well as West Nipissing," said Wendy Watson, Communications Officer for Greater Sudbury Utilities/Greater Sudbury Hydro in a news release.

"Some Sudburians are served by Hydro One, some by us. In the excitement of an outage, sometimes people forget who they should call, so we've put an interactive tool using Google maps on our website to help. Of course, they can always simply check their latest bill as well."
