Val Caron resident Joanne Beaudry-Larocque had a hungry visitor swing by her yard on the weekend.

She was sitting out in her backyard when a young male black bear came wandering in out of the woods to snack on her neighbour's apple tree.

“This is the third time that we've seen a bear this year already,” said Beaudry Larocque. “There seems to be a lot (of bears) out this summer. This is already more than I saw all last year.”

The first sighting Joanne had this year was a mother bear with two cubs, and the second was the closest encounter yet.

“A young male bear came right up onto our deck and my husband had to shoo him away,” said Beaudry-Larocque.

The couple live on Olivia Street in Val Caron, not far from Whitson Lake.

Beaudry-Larocque was not using any zoom on her camera when she took this photo and in an email to NorthernLife.ca wrote, “this was up close and personal...living in the north!”
