Julian Fantino, the associate minister of National Defence, was at the Fort Chippewa Barricks in North Bay on July 20 to announce a $9.2-million federal investment in the Gateway City’s 22 Wing Squadron and the M.L.Troy Armoury.

The local allotments are part of the $452-million fund announced last November to upgrade infrastructure on Canadian Armed Forces facilities. The government estimates about 10,000 jobs will be created by the program, which aims to wrap up by the end of 2016.

While in North Bay, Fantino said the investment is key to keeping Canada’s military infrastructure strong and called North Bay a strategic place important to the security of North America.

“We are making sure we maintain the asset as best we can,” he said.

Of the $9.2 million, $2.9 million will be used to renovate 22 Wing, including repairs to the fire-detection system in the Underground Complex which entails replacing the fire-suppression system, repairing a roof and the emergency-lighting system, and replacing a heating boiler.

The remaining amount — $6.3 million —will be spent renovating the M.L. Troy Amoury, including roof repairs, upgraded washrooms and improvements to the emergency-lighting systems.
