On Aug. 6, the ALS Society will be celebrating the one-year anniversary of the Ice Bucket Challenge across Canada.

The Sudbury Girls and Ladies Fast-Pitch Softball Association will kick off the Ice Bucket Challenge during their year-end final tournament on Aug. 8 in Sudbury.

All players and coaches from the Squirts and Bantam divisions will meet at Terry Fox Field main bunk house on Aug. 8 at 11:30 a.m.

Home Depot will be providing the buckets. ALS merchandise will be available for purchase. Proceeds will help support families living with ALS across northern Ontario. Prizes will be raffled off throughout the weekend to raise money as well.

ALS is a terminal disease that affects a person’s ability to walk, eat, talk and breathe. Sadly there is still no cure or treatment. More than 1,200 people in Ontario are diagnosed.

World-renowned baseball player Lou Gehrig died from ALS in 1941, at the age of 37, thus the popular name for ALS, Lou Gehrig's Disease.
