It might not seem like a lot of work, but it takes the City of Greater Sudbury weeks to repaint crosswalks and intersections every summer.
Naturally, the city doesn’t repaint all 300 intersections, 525 stop bars (the wide white stop line) and 525 crosswalks — that’s 240,386 feet of real estate, by the way — in the core of Sudbury, nor the 212 intersections, 141 crosswalks and 298 stop bars in outlying communities of Greater Sudbury — that’s 89,757 feet of space.
The city told NorthernLife.ca it couldn’t provide a complete list of all intersections that are on the list for repainting this summer, but by way of example said there were 33 on Lasalle Boulevard and 13 on Notre Dame Avenue on the list.
Spokesperson Shannon Dowling said it takes two to three hours to paint an intersection, or a whole shift to repaint the so-called zebra-style crosswalks (i.e. the kind that crosses Brady Street near Tom Davies Square.
The schedule is very much depend on weather (it’s got to be dry) and traffic (the higher the traffic, the longer it takes).
Lasalle is due to be complete before the end of July, with Notre Dame finished up two weeks later. The city will then move into the South End, which will take about a week.
