No fire bans in Greater Sudbury at the moment

There has been some scorching hot weather blanketing Greater Sudbury for the past two days.

Since July 28, there have been numerous forest fires reported in the Northeast region, and Sudbury remains at an extreme hazard level.

Despite these factors, there has not yet been any fire ban implemented by Greater Sudbury Fire Prevention Services or the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF).

“There are two different bans that can be implemented, either a provincial ban that comes down from the Ministry (of Natural Resources and Forestry) or a local ban implemented by a municipality,” said Shayne McCool, information officers with the Northeast fire region under MNRF.

“I know there have been a few bans implemented in some townships on Manitoulin Island and areas that have seen extreme hazard levels for a few days, but we have not put in a region-wide ban as of right now.”

The reason for no ban from MNRF, according to McCool, is that the extreme hazard levels are spread too thin, right now mainly in Sault Ste. Marie to Greater Sudbury.

“Right now we've been able to allocate enough resources to manage the fires that are ongoing, so we haven't needed to put in a ban,” said McCool.

In the Greater Sudbury Area there has not been any ban as of yet, and the city's fire prevention services is falling in line with what the MNRF is doing right now.

“At the moment we are keeping with the policy of the (MNRF),” said Marc Lanthier, chief fire prevention officer for the city of Greater Sudbury.

“We've been keeping an eye on the forecasts and we're supposed to get some cooler weather and some rain soon so there shouldn't be any need for a fire ban.”

Lanthier also noted that things can change in a hurry and for residents who are planning to have camp fires over the long weekend to keep updated with the status of any fire bans by dialing 3-1-1 ext. 2760.
