A Gore Bay man has been fined $2,500 for hunting and safety violations.

The man pleaded guilty and was fined $1,000 for hunting big game without a licence and $1,500 for using a firearm carelessly to hunt.

The man is not allowed to hunt for one year and must complete the Ontario Hunter Education Course before hunting in the province again.

Court heard that on November 21, 2014, conservation officers responded to a Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry TIPS line complaint that an individual shot at a deer next to Manitoulin Transport in the town of Gore Bay.

Officers arrived and found a six-point buck, along with a smaller buck that the man had previously killed.

Officers questioned him and it was determined that he shot a deer on Nov. 17, 2014, and did not have an additional validation seal for the second deer.

Further investigation determined that he had discharged his 12-gauge shotgun twice, loaded with buckshot, in the direction of Manitoulin Transport during regular business hours. Manitoulin Transport employs about 200 workers.

Justice of the Peace Darlene Hayden heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Gore Bay, on July 2.

The public is reminded that laws regarding the use of firearms are in place for public protection and safety.
