Upon arriving in Gogama, Nickel Belt NDP candidate Claude Gravelle learned of the Lockerby mine closure and issued the following statement:

Having worked at a mine for over 30 years, my family and I fully understand the stress and uncertainty this closure brings to so many families. Our thoughts are with these workers and their families as they deal with this unexpected development.

It is deeply troubling that under Stephen Harper’s watch there were 2,300 more unemployed people in the Sudbury area in the last 6 months – this closure will only make things worse.

The fact is, the Conservatives have failed to build a balanced economy that will protect Canadians' jobs – people in our communities in Nickel Belt and Sudbury, and across the North face stagnant wages and a struggling job market. Families are working harder than ever to build a good life for their family, but can’t get ahead.

I'm proud that Tom Mulcair has a plan that will support natural resource production, help small business and invest in strong community infrastructure – creating good, skilled jobs opportunities here in our communities.
