Grade 12 Lockerby Composite School student Ethan Urban will serve as student trustee on the Rainbow District School Board for the 2015-2016 school year.

He was sworn in at the board meeting Aug. 25.

“Rainbow District School Board values the student voice,” said chair Doreen Dewar in welcoming Urban to his new role.

“Ethan Urban will bring this important perspective to the table as a student trustee. He will also have an opportunity to gain a first-hand look at the role of elected officials in a democratic society as well as develop leadership skills that will last a lifetime.”

Ethan said he looks forward to serving as the voice of Rainbow Board's students.

“Being appointed student trustee for Rainbow District School Board is one of the highest honours I have received,” he said in a news release. “I will be an active member at the board table, ensuring that I remain engaged and educated in the topics that arise.”

Urban said his goal as a student was to get involved.

“I joined volleyball, curling, Students' Council, the Anti-bullying Committee, and took any other opportunity I received to help out my school and my community,” he said.

“Throughout these opportunities came wonderful accomplishments, including winning the 2015 OFSAA championship in curling, being appointed Students' Council Co-President in Grade 11 and making a difference in the school and the community through the Students' Council.”

Urban plans to pursue a Bachelor of Science at McMaster University or Queen’s University, then apply to medical school.

The first day of school is Tuesday, Sept. 8 for all area school boards, including Rainbow District School Board, the Sudbury Catholic District School Board, le Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario and le Conseil scolaire public du Grand Nord de l’Ontario. There will be no early dismissal on the first day.
