Mother Nature couldn't rain on this parade

Despite the gloomy weather on Sept. 7, union representatives gathered en force for the annual Labour Day Celebration at Bell Park.

They marched in a parade from Bell Park, down Paris Street to Science North, then back along the boardwalk. They gathered at Grace Hartman Amphitheatre for speeches by dignitaries, including Nickel Belt MP Claude Gravelle and Sudbury federal NDP candidate Paul Loewenberg.

Then it was time for fun, with food and games for the entire family.

Jamie West, president of the Sudbury and District Labour Council, said the reason behind the festival is that residents need to take the time every year to remember those who have lost their lives on the job.

This year's theme was “Time For Change,” and with the upcoming federal election in October, there were many people in attendance seeking change in government. Plenty of anti Stephen Harper signs were visible, and there was a definite orange tinge to the festivities.
