More than 650 people faced the cool, and damp, fall weather Sunday to participate in the CIBC Run for the Cure in Sudbury.

Together, they helped raise more than $95,000 for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

The foundation is the leading organization in Canada dedicated to creating a future without breast cancer, and invests in research, education and health promotion programs have led progress in breast cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment and care.

“I think it's important because breast cancer affects so many people, whether it's a mother, a grandmother, a sister, a friend,” said Dana Crispo, site co-ordinator for the CIBC Run for the Cure in Sudbury.

Sunday's event, which took place at Cambrian College, included a five-kilometre run or walk, a one-kilometre run/walk and an energetic zumba fitness group.

The zumba group was a new addition last year, and Crispo said it was a big hit.

Even with major strides in breast cancer research, the disease will still affect one in nine Canadian women over the course of their lifetimes.

It is the most common form of cancer for women over the age of 20, and is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths for Canadian women.
