And now, Sudburian Alfred Lafantasie has been presented with a Ontario Senior Achievement Award to recognize his efforts.

He's a volunteer with the local chapter of the Red Cross in Sudbury, helping with their seniors' transportation program.

The organization estimates that over the last 15 years, he has driven more than 200,000 kilometres to help seniors remain independent and living in their homes.

Lafantasie was recently presented with the award by Ontario Lieutenant Governor Elizabeth Dowdeswell at a ceremony at Queen's Park this week. The award is the highest provincial honour for seniors over the age of 65.

“Individuals like Mr. Lafantasie set an example for all of the generations that follow of the kind of lasting impact and legacy that is possible when you give back,” said Sudbury MPP Glenn Thibeault, in a press release.

“The community of Greater Sudbury is stronger and richer for all of us thanks to contributions such as this one.”

“I congratulate the recipients of this year's Ontario Senior Achievement Awards,” said Mario Sergio, minister responsible for Seniors Affairs. “They represent a generation of people whose wisdom and compassion for others have helped build the province we love and enjoy.”
