You've probably heard about Black Friday and Cyber Monday, when most retailers offer deep discounts.

Charitable groups are hoping Giving Tuesday — a day encouraging people to give to good causes and held right after these big shopping events — also catches on.

To commemorate Giving Tuesday, DiBrina Group is matching any donations made to United Way Sudbury and Nipissing Districts on Tuesday, Dec. 1.

The offer is part of the United Way's 1day4unitedway fundraising event. The United Way is asking the community to take action locally to help create a better place to live, work and raise a family.

“We're very excited about this day and the way that I envision this is that on Dec. 25 Santa Claus wears his red suit and gives gifts to your family and friends and on Dec.1 United Way wears their red suits and it's our way to give back to our community,” said Mike DiBrina, DiBrina Group president, in a press release.

“Hopefully on Dec. 1 our local businesses and individuals will give back to the community and make this a better place to live.”

Donation tubes will be set up at a number of local businesses, and donations can also be made online at 1Day4UnitedWay.ca.

Businesses are also being encouraged to participate in one-time fundraising activities to raise money, create awareness and promote team spirit in friendly competitions.

“When you give to 1day4united way you are taking part in a local movement and demonstrating the power of collective action and we can all accomplish together,” said Michael Cullen, executive director, United Way Sudbury and Nipissing districts.

“Our hope is to inspire past, present, and future donors to support our campaign by coming together and showing how powerful our community can be when we unite to give on one day.”
