Forests Ontario has approved Conservation Sudbury to become a Planting Delivery Agency under the 50 Million Tree Program.
Since the program's inception in 2008, more than 20 million trees have been planted in the province, with an ultimate goal of planting 50 million trees by 2025.
"I am excited to have Conservation Sudbury as the first conservation authority in Northern Ontario to be approved as a Planting Delivery Agent for the 50 Million Tree Program," said Peter Gagnon, Northern Ontario Field Advisor for Trees Ontario, based out of Sault Ste. Marie.
“Land owners in the Sudbury region can now access this major tree planting subsidy and support the establishment of new forests across Northern Ontario.”
Conservation Sudbury will work directly with landowners to determine tree planting site eligibility, allocate funding, co-ordinate planting, and complete reporting.
Funding assistance is available for eligible landowners interested in planting trees on their properties.
Properties in the watersheds of the Vermillion, Wanapitei, or Whitefish rivers (and some surrounding areas) that have at least 2.5 acres (1 hectare) of open or mostly open land, could qualify.
By planting trees, land owners help increase soil and water conservation, reduce the effects of storms, fight climate change, improve wildlife habitat and contribute to a greener, healthier Ontario, a press release said.
