Walmart was among the retailers to announce Thursday they plan to open both of its Greater Sudbury locations on Boxing Day. The store also is extending its operating hours Sundays until 10 p.m., although it's checking staff availability before deciding whether it will open late this Sunday, Dec. 13. File photo.

A spokesperson for Walmart Canada confirmed Friday that in the coming weeks, you'll need to deposit a loonie to unlock a shopping cart at the New Sudbury Walmart. When you return the cart, you get your money back.

“Walmart Canada is installing a cart deposit system at some locations to help ensure shopping carts are returned to the cart corral area,” said Anika Malik, manager of corporate affairs at Walmart Canada, in an email to NorthernLife.ca.

“We expect this will increase availability of carts for customers. The cart deposit system will be installed at select stores across the country over the coming weeks.”
