The City of Greater Sudbury has received the 2013 FCM Sustainable Communities Award for its Brownfield Strategy and Community Improvement Plan from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.

The FCM awards, presented to 12 municipalities across Canada, recognize innovation and excellence in sustainable local development.

“Sudbury has again demonstrated leadership in facing environmental challenges and developing economic opportunities,” said Mayor Marianne Matichuk. “I commend city staff and council for being proactive and seizing these opportunities. It’s projects such as these that make Greater Sudbury a world class city in which to live, work and play.”

Reclaiming Our Urban Places, Greater Sudbury’s Brownfield Strategy and Community Improvement Plan, offers financial incentives to redevelop vacated properties that were previously used for commercial or industrial purposes.

The plan is designed to reduce the number of vacated, underused and derelict urban properties in the community by offering potential purchasers assistance with up-front costs associated with remediation, reuse and redevelopment.

“I am very proud that the excellent work of our municipal planning staff has achieved recognition in a national forum,” said Bill Lautenbach, General Manager of Growth and Development. “Reclaiming Our Urban Places has economic, environmental and social benefits that can return many vacant properties to full and productive urban uses.”
