Dupuis has been a city councillor representing the Valley East area since amalgamation in 2000. He has been councillor for Ward 5 since the city restructured the ward system for the 2006 election.

He has chaired several major boards and committees in Greater Sudbury, including the police services board, the audit committee and the health unit board.

A lifelong resident of Greater Sudbury, Dupuis was deputy mayor for more than four years. He worked at Inco for more than 18 years and previously was part owner of the Sudbury Wolves and Rayside-Balfour Sabrecats.

Dupuis and his wife Denise have lived in Greater Sudbury for more than 35 years. They have three children and six grandchildren.

If he runs for mayor, he'll join newcomer Jeff Huska and Ed Pokonzie as the only declared candidates, and will be the first with experience in government.

Huska is making his first foray in politics, while Pokonzie has run in several elections, garnering a handful of votes each time.

Incumbent Mayor Marianne Matichuk has yet to announce whether she'll run for reelection. Former Mayor John Rodriguez has said in the past he'll run again to try and win back the job, which he lost to Matichuk in 2010.

It has been speculated for months Dupuis would run for the top job in local government, as indicated by the fact four candidates have already registered to run for his seat in Ward 5 – Joseph Berthelot, Robert Kirwan, John Lundrigan and Kent MacNeill.

Residents across Ontario will vote in local elections Oct. 27.
