Late spring delays completion of Lasalle-Notre Dame project

“We're going to have to get into the warmer weather in July to do the paving effectively,” Tony Cecutti said Tuesday. “We have to wait until the asphalt plants are open.”

“So our plan is to be off the road by the end of July.”

Work began in May 2013 on the project, which included rebuilding the road, installing new water and sewer lines and relocating hydro poles to accommodate wider turning lanes. The new intersection is wider and has more turning and through lanes, increasing its capacity to handle large volumes of traffic.

The new traffic signals make use of thermal cameras, which use heat from engines and tires to judge when a car has entered the intersection. They are more accurate than sensors and other cameras, which can be affected by weather conditions.

Lasalle and Notre Dame is the city's fourth busiest intersection, with more than 50,000 cars a day passing through the area. It acts as a route for many to the Valley, New Sudbury and downtown. While paving is delayed by about two weeks, curb removal and replacement begins Monday.

Other roads projects to keep an eye on as the season moves into high gear include:

Paris Street: Southbound traffic on Paris Street from Centennial Drive to Walford Road will be reduced to one lane from 2 a.m.- 8 p.m. on May 5;

Windle Drive: Sanitary sewer work on Windle Drive from Loach’s road to Millwood Crescent will close the road for four weeks starting May 5. Local traffic will only have access from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Pedestrians will be escorted across the site.

Loach’s Road: Starting May 12, Loach’s Road from Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School to Armstrong Street will be reduced to one lane to complete watermain installation. Work is expected to be completed in September.

King Street: Asphalt removal and installation, sidewalk work and sanitary and water main services work will start on King Street on May 5, and should be complete by September. King Street will be closed from Laforest Street to Kehoe Street until June 21, and from Laforest Street to Notre Dame Avenue from June 22 to July 30. Work will take place between 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Ontario Street and John Street West: Curb and sidewalk repair will run May 5-June 15. Work will take place between 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
