OTTAWA - The federal Green party is enjoying a fundraising bonanza, making larger gains in this year's second quarter than any other political party.

Financial reports released by Elections Canada show the Greens raised $531,404 in the second quarter of 2014, representing a 67 per cent increase over the same period in 2013.

The party also saw significant growth in the number of donors contributing, with 7,546 donating to the party in second quarter of 2014, a 66 per cent gain from a year earlier.

The Liberals and Conservatives, meantime, saw their fundraising revenues decline relative to the second quarter of 2013. The NDP enjoyed modest gains.

Green party Leader Elizabeth May says the numbers show Canadians are turning to the party as a meaningful alternative, helping it build momentum in the leadup to the 2015 election.

The party has not been without recent controversy, however. On Tuesday, party president Paul Estrin stepped down in the midst of a backlash against a pro-Israel blog post he wrote that was posted to the party's website.

Some supporters threatened to quit the party, while others applauded Estrin.
