Cruikshank’s husband, Derek, who was with her in the canoe, survived and paddled alone for several days until he reached a trapper’s cabin. The trapper visited his cabin, discovered Derek and brought him to the hospital in Moosenee.

Police conducted a search on Saturday for Cruikshank’s body, which was  found in a shallow bay on the river.

Cruikshank, an avid outdoor enthusiast, worked as a nurse.  She is survived by her husband, parents Steve and Theresa Yawney, her brothers Peter, Patrick and Joseph and sisters Debbie, Shelley, and Joan.

Cruikshank’s funeral was held at Our Lady of Hope Church yesterday and the family asked for donations to be made to Paddle to Cure Cancer.
