UPDATE: Sudbury police have released new information about Wednesday's stabbing at the New Sudbury Shopping Centre.

The male suspect, believed to be in his twenties, was seen shoplifting in the mall. When mall employees tried to stop him he stabbed one of them in their armpit.

The employee received non-life threatening injuries.

Prior to the stabbing and attempted arrest, the suspect was seen with a female who has yet to be identified. Along with the description of the suspect below, the man was not wearing any shoes at the time.

Police conducted an "extensive search" of the area, including railway tracks along Barrydowne Rd., with help from the OPP canine unit and helicopter assistance. However, the search yielded no results.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to phone police at 675-9171 or Crime Stoppers at 675-TIPS.

Just before 1 p.m. this afternoon (July 22) a New Sudbury Shopping Centre employee was stabbed by an 18-year-old.

The suspect was being followed by security within the mall and when he ran security chased after him outside. The stabbing occurred outside when the suspect pulled out a knife and stabbed the mall employee.

Security was warned to stay back and the male fled on foot in a westbound direction. He was last seen south of the railway tracks west of Attlee Avenue.

The victim was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital and is being treated for his injury.
The suspect is described as a native youth, with a medium build and short brown hair. He was wearing a white tank top, black track pants and a black coat with red on the shoulders.

The suspect may still be in possession of a knife that is said to have a six-inch blade.

Greater Sudbury Police are requesting the public’s assistance in locating or identifying the individual that appears on the photo obtained from Mall cameras.  If anyone observes this suspect, police advise not to approach him, but rather to call police as he is considered armed and dangerous.

If anyone has any information regarding this crime, the suspect, or his location phone Greater Sudbury Police at 675-9171 or Crime Stoppers at 675-TIPS.

  • Response to SW10.This was a comment on the sad state of native youth in our society. You are obviously not intellegent enough to understand.

  • I believe it is called aiding & abetting... and yes it should happen. I don't know how often it actually occurs or if it just gets dropped in the long run of coarse they can also plead ignorance to the fact that said person was wanted or if they were found to be lying to cover up his whereabouts.
But I'm no lawyer or judge, obviously...lol
I might not even be right?

  • If friends, family or relatives are hiding this individual they should also be charged. The same as the ones who help hide kids who run away from home and have police spending valuable time looking for them.

  • lmao...well put Anon1 , i wouldn't wish that area on anyone : )

  • Response to Habs,
"white" male 5"10 Dino's Confectionary Robbery, "white" male 25-30 years old - Bancraft Pharmacy, Gun Robbery - Zellers - "white" male, and what about the " drunk white guy" that killed those three teenagers in Hanmer?!!?! And all you notive is the one native mentioned in the news... ignorant white guy "what a surprise"

  • wonderful, clearly this took place in new sudbury NOT DOWNTOWN, mavericks77... nice to see you are informed...lol
i guess you won't see a kinfe coming at you in new sudbury eh?
this is why I barely shop in new sudbury although maybe I should with all of this rain the upturner noses make great umbrellas. you see this kid up here?
the deference between him & you are maybe a few bucks... but you do seem equally ignorant.
    un real!
I hope they catch this guy in your back yard. I notice a large upswing in the crimes OUTSIDE of the downtown area...
hmmm... I guess you folks are becoming the dreggs of society.

  • Glad to hear the victim is recovering and I hope the police locate this person quickly.
CritiCall...given the eyewitness reports it can safely be assumed that suspect is armed, dangerous and not very bright. However, there is nothing to suggest he is a masochist so I expect we can take one location off your list of hide-a-ways.

  • Motorboat...you may very well be correct...while "on the lam" a few more areas not to be overlooked would be Fairview-Pearl,Louis Street,Bessie St to name a few....Hell, while we're at it, lets check out AngryAaron's Place....

  • Another native in trouble,what a surprise

  • This chap is 18, and obviously not smart. He is relying on family and friends to hide him. How hard is it to just pressure his family into giving him up? Dog the Bounty Hunter does it all the time.... jeeeez

  • The police need look no further than downtown timmies or the bus depot

  • we stand, united
    we will not be divided

    i've never, conceded
    I cannot be defeated

  • If the police have released his name, then he's obviously a "repeat" offender. Once again, our justice system probably slapped him on the wrist, and told him to behave.
How many inches does it take for a stab wound to go from assault to murder???

  • Perhaps, this young man should get a job. It is quite obvious that he is stealing clothes for one of two reasons: he wanted new clothes without paying for them or he steals them to sell to others as a way of generating an income. Shame on him for thinking he can get something without working for it. In our society, there are single mothers and single fathers working min. wage jobs to feed and clothe their children. How dare this young man think he has the right to a free ride in life and use a knife to intentionally inflict injury on someone who is just doing their work.

  • I think you are a little confused. It didn't happen downtown.

  • The kid had it all planned out. Steal stuff and if they catch me stab them...And when this punk gets caught he'll get a slap on the hand. I lived in Sudbury all my life and is one of the reason I don't shop downtown.

  • Good! It's only a matter of time before this guy is picked up. I appauld Greater Sudbury Police on this matter for the swift response and their efforts in this matter. Dogs, a helicopter, plus New Sudbury was crawling with cruisers yesterday afternoon. It's only a matter of time before this guy is located. If he had any sense at all (unlikely) he would turn himself in. He's stabbed one person trying to arrest him already. Police would keep that in mind and not hesitate to use force if he tries anything stupid.

  • From what I've heard, he stole clothing from Sears.

It doesn't matter what he stole. Here is what matters: you take the chance to steal and get caught, then you're caught. That's it. It's your own fault for breaking the law in the first place. There is not a single reason in the WORLD to physically harm someone that's putting you under arrest lawfully, let alone stab them. The victim could have died. Over what? Some pairs of pants? Because the punk MAY have had a "bad childhood"? Oh please.

  • Does anyone know what he was shoplifting?
