One of the men involved in a drive-by firing-bombing incident at a house in Hanmer on Feb. 28 has been located by police.

The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. at a home on Lafontaine Street. Both Greater Sudbury Fire and Police Services attended the scene. Flames from the incendiary devices caused damage to the front of the home, though the fire was extinguished quickly. The home was occupied at the time of the incident, however there were no injuries.

Witness statements and evidence observed at the scene indicate that there were three people involved – the driver of the suspect vehicle and two passengers – and that the car used is described as being, or very similar to, a red Dodge Charger or Avenger. The passengers are described as males, medium to stocky build, wearing dark clothing; at least one of the suspects was wearing a balaclava.

The suspect who has been arrested is a 26-year-old resident of Belle Vallee, Que. He is in custody facing numerous charges, including mischief under $5,000, mischief endangering life, arson disregard for human life, arson damage to property, possession of incendiary materials, disguise with intent, common nuisance, possession of an offensive volatile substance, trespass at night near dwelling, possession of weapons dangerous, and weapons possession contrary to a prohibition order. He is scheduled to appear in bail court March 22.

The investigation continues in relation to identifying and locating the other involved parties. Anyone with information is asked to contact Police at 674-7511 or Crime Stoppers at 222-TIPS, online at www.sudburycrimestoppers.com or by texting TIPSUD and the information to CRIMES (274637).

  • What does any of this have to do with the USW?

The gentleman is from Quebec. This residence has been known for gang related activity in the past. Now putting 2 and 2 together i could assume that this 26 year old is part of a gang.

  • USWA has brought all this attention on themselves folks.
If you operate like thugs, and have your members either arrested or investigated for property damage, assaults, and threats; you become a logical magnet of suspicion for most anonymous violent acts.

Yup, the odd one will be tagged to someone else. But, if an organization openly promotes illegal acts, they deserve all the finger pointing.

  • I duess certain people on here must be living their lives with blinders on or their freakin head stuck in the sand.
Believe it or not there was crime and violence happening in this city long before the strike and will continue long after. That's why we have a police force in this city.

A fire bombing in the valley? Must be USW related.

A teen fight on Lansdowne with brass knuckles? Must be USW related.

A driver found drunk behind the wheel? Again, must be USW related.

People on here should wake up! Everything that goes on in this city is NOT steelworker related.

  • The punks around our city are in heaven. We can do stuff and the USW members will be blamed. You all are falling right into it. To funny. Wake up people, and get a life.

  • No Phillip, it is not just because he comes from a different area that he is not a union member... he is not a 6500 union member, this we know for sure though. Sure anyone could aid and abet crime without being directly involved in a the conflict, however this is unlikely. The house that was targeted by the 'flame thrower' was apparrently the same house that police attended on other incedents in past not at all related to the strike or union or Vale in any way. Whether this crime was gangs, mafia, common criminal element, domestic dispute, or other is still not known or devulged by the police. Besides, Steelworkers or any other accused does not have to prove their innocence in courts, rather the prosecuter must prove guilt beyond reasonable doubt.

  • So if you come from another area originally, you automatically can't be suspected of being part of a union?
I, like many others, didn't immediately point the finger at 6500 being responsible. However, until any ties to labour are completley ruled out at the end of the investigation, it remains a plausable theory.
This incident has many possible motives. Organized crime to a family dispute. Bottom line is for anybody to rule out labour just because they are a union lemming is beyond ignorance.

  • Hey share the wealth:
You must try to NOT waste your time with these Vale bloggers! Remember we have about 150,000 people in this community which most of them have better things to do then to put down unionized people! These bloggers are the minority and are always the same little bunch that cannot and will not change anything as they are toooooooooooooo busy in their own little world that acomplishes NOTHING! They understand nothing and will continue to do so!

  • That settles it then all you people who point the finger for all mischief or crime in the city later being attributed to "union thugs", it is clear, The police have identified this suspect from out of province and he is Definately not a 6500 Steelworker... now what will the pro Vale bloggers have to say....what spin will they put on this little factual item?.........HMMMMMM
