A man who snatched the purse of a woman confined to a wheelchair was arrested after the efforts of several good Samaritans and officers of the Greater Sudbury Police.

The woman had her purse snatched around 11:30 a.m., March 10, on Lisgar Street. Several bystanders chased after the man, while others called 911.

The man was found hiding in an industrial sized garbage bin (sometimes referred to as a nimbin), near the Sudbury Arena.

He had the stolen purse, and when searched was found to be in possession of drugs and a concealed knife.

He has been charged with a count each of robbery, possession of stolen property, and carrying a concealed weapon.

Anyone who witnessed the theft or with information is asked to contact the Greater Sudbury Police at 675-9171, or Sudbury Rainbow Crime Stoppers at 222-TIPS (8477).

  • "Get rid of the liquor store! Put it inside the mall, where there is security."

    THIS.

  • GUARANTEED!!!!!, this guy will get a slap on the wrist! This is the Canadian justice system remember, where you get more time in jail for fraud than you do for murder!

  • He snatch the purse then headed for home,GARBAGE bin.

  • Get rid of the liquor store! Put it inside the mall, where there is security. Re-instate police foot patrols downtown - rookie police should have to "walk the beat" to get a feel of dealing with the public. It's nice to see that concerned citizens assisted in this case, but chasing a criminal can be a deadly decision. Of course, anyone who steals a purse from a woman in a wheelchair is the lowest form of life anyway.

  • I'm not blaming the police, I'm blaming our city politicians that think that video survelance is better (cheaper) than a police presence. And dont blame the judges, they cant dish out punishments any more severe than the law will allow and again, the law that was created by politicians. It's always easier to blame the courts rather than those who create them.

  • ...don't blame the police on this....they catch the slime of our city, but the judges let them back out...

  • Just another result of relying on video cameras to police the downtown core, seemed like a good idea at the time, I guess.
We need a bigger police presence especially in the downtown. Tim Hortons, The transit treminal, the liquer store and the mall have all gone to hell since these video cemeras went up. It's no wonder that businesses cant seem to survive there.

  • I was sitting by a window at my favourite restaurant when the thief ran by with the black purse. He had another guy with him. I'm glad they caught the thief...in the Nim Bin, where he belongs! Thank you, to the police and witnesses.

What will it take before we can get a bigger police presence down town? There are all kinds of elderly folks living at St. Andrew's Place - just around the corner from where this happened.

I have worked downtown for 17 years and I have seen all kinds of crime happening in broad daylight. I definitely notice things are better when summer comes and the police are seen cruising around on their bicycles. But what about winter? Crime still happens in the winter!
