UPDATED — Aug. 8, 9: 13 a.m.

A Greater Sudbury driver is facing charges after allegedly trying to elude police by claiming his vehicle, which was involved in a collision, had been stolen from his property — but then returned, damaged.

The motor collision occurred at the intersection of Lasalle Boulevard. and Drummond Avenue Aug. 7 at 2:38 p.m.

The driver of a Ford pickup truck allegedly turned left on Drummond Avenue from Lasalle Boulevard, crossing in front of a truck travelling west. The two collided, and the driver of the truck fled the scene by crossing the lawn of a nearby apartment complex, according to a press release from the Greater Sudbury Police.

Two people in the other vehicle were taken by Sudbury EMS to Sudbury Regional Hospital, where they were treated for minor injuries.

Witnesses to the accident gave the license plate number of the fleeing truck to police following the collision. A few minutes after the accident, the owner of the truck called police to report the truck had been stolen and then returned to his residence with damage.

“Officers went to the owner's residence and, after subsequent investigation, arrested him for impaired driving and public mischief for falsely reporting the vehicle stolen,” police said in the press release.

A blood alcohol test revealed the owner of the vehicle, a 51-year-old man, had about three times the legal amount of alcohol in his system. He is now facing charges of impaired driving, failure to remain at the scene of an accident, and public mischief.

Time for the judges to start handing out the maximum possible fines and and maximum jail time on all charges.

Sudbury needs to start putting it's foot down.
