UPDATED — Aug. 17, 3:33 p.m.

Three vehicles were involved in a fatal crash about 3 km east of the Hwy 17/69 interchange.

The driver of a Toyota Corolla was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Preliminary investigation indicates the car veered into the westbound lane and was struck head-on by a tractor trailer.

The driver of the tractor trailer lost control of his vehicle after it struck the Corolla and it sideswiped another vehicle before it ran off the road and into a deep ravine, according to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).

The driver of the tractor trailer suffered minor injuries in the accident, as did the two occupants of the third vehicle. The deceased was the only passenger in the first vehicle, and a name has not been released.

The OPP are asking motorists to avoid the area as it will be closed until about 8 p.m. Traffic is being rerouted at both ends of the bypass.

Starting at 8 a.m. tomorrow, Aug. 18, the bypass will also be down to one lane as crews clean up the scene of the accident.

  • "Regardless may she Rest In Peace."

She? Why do you assume it's a she ... or did I miss something??

  • 10-4....... 99gt. I was thinking the same thing.

  • First off divided highways are safer..plain and simple.

Regardless of why it happend it still happends. Having a divided hwy would reduce the risk of head on collisions such as this one.

  • Why do people always think that 4 laning is the answer to everything???. If people would pay attention when they are on the roads, especially highways, then there wouldn't be as many accidents. People drive tired because they are too stupid/stubborn to pull over and rest...I still see multiple drivers on cell phones even though that is supposed to be illegal...they put on makeup, eat etc while DRIVING!!!. Maybe when people stop being idiots and pay attention to the roads as they should be then less lives will be lost. In this case if it was driver error I am glad she only took her own life instead of someone innocent. If it was a mechanical fault of the car or she had some health issue then I feel very bad it happened at all. Regardless may she Rest In Peace.

  • People need to stop screaming "four lane" every time we have an accident happen. We do not know what happened here, so it is best to wait for the result of the investigation. But once we have a reason for the crash, if one can be found, then we can deal with it. There are far more bad drivers than there are bad roads, and people have to realize that, though this accident has not been ruled driver error.

  • Four laning the highway is not the answer. Who's going to pay for this? The city doesn't have the money to do this let alone maintain it's current roads.

How about people pay attention while they drive. There isn't any reason for a car to veer into the other lane.

It's like drivers blaming curves in a road (even though it's been there for years) for accidents when they drive to fast for it even when there's signs indicating a curve ahead and a slower recommended speed limit.

  • if the bypass was four lane this acc, might of only been with only one vec. come on Sudbury the city is growing its time to four lane that road never mind what other people say about the green land just do it befor more people get killed

  • From another site "Police say the closure, which went into effect about 11:05 a.m., could last three-four hours."

  • Without a time indicating when the article was posted a 3-4 hour estimate means nothing to us. :(
