A 52-year-old man who attempted to shoplift, is now facing a charge of assault as well.

Police were called to Dumas Your Independent Grocer on Lorne Street around 6:10 p.m. Aug. 28. Once they arrived at the grocery store, a man was being restrained by store security after attempting to leave the store with $32 in stolen items.

While the security guard attempted to restrain the man, the suspect punched and attempted to bite the guard.

The man is being held in police custody and is will be released with a court date to answer to charges of assault and theft under $5,000.

The security guard did not suffer any injuries.
