A series of “unfortunate circumstances” led to the death of a Greater Sudbury snowmobiler in Gogama Feb. 28, according to Ontario Provincial Police.

South Porcupine detachment commander Rick Witty said the snowmobiler, 73-year-old Alfred Roy, died after his machine rolled on him while he was trying to get it unstuck from the side of a trail.

Police began a search for Roy after a friend and neighbour contacted them around 7:30 p.m. Feb. 28, concerned about Roy being overdue.

A search of the Blackie Lake area by the police's emergency response team led to Roy's body being found shortly past midnight on March 1.

"There was no driving behaviour, with respect to speed, alcohol or lack of use of safety equipment, that led to the death of the gentleman," Witty said. "It was just an unfortunate circumstance."
