Small brush fires a reminder that forest fire danger is real

Greater Sudbury Fire Services responded to two brush fires on May 8 in the same area of Val Caron.

The first, in the area of Donald and Brunet Streets at 3:30 p.m., was quickly extinguished a press release stated. Three youth, ages 9-13 years, were seen leaving the area of the fire.

The second, in the same area occurred at 6:30 the same evening, Three men in a newer model Chevy Silverado were seen in the area acting “in a suspicious manner.”

No arrests have been made due to a lack of evidence.

Staff Sergeant Jordan Buchanan with the Greater Sudbury police services said citizens need to be careful.

“We do get grass fire and brush fire (calls) and we just want people to be aware how dangerous (they are) this time of year,” he said. “Everything is so dry.”

According to the Ministry of Natural Resources, the current forest fire danger for the Sudbury district is high.

As a result, the public is reminded that while engaging in outdoor activities, such as walking and hiking or riding ATVs in the bush, to properly extinguish cigarettes and to ensure that any campfires are out completely.
