A 26-year-old Greater Sudbury man is facing a number of charges, including impaired driving, after Greater Sudbury Police observed him driving erratically on Bancroft Drive June 21 at around 2:30 a.m.

Officers noticed a pickup truck speeding out of the Moonlight Beach parking lot. The driver made no attempt to stop at the stop sign at the intersection of Moonlight and Bancroft Drive, a press release from police said.

While driving westbound on Bancroft, the driver crossed into the eastbound lanes for about 50 metres, returned to the proper lane, and then periodically crossed the centre line again.

Officers approached the vehicle after it stopped because the driver was attempting to change positions with his female passenger.

The driver failed a roadside alcohol screening test, the press release said. The suspect was then brought to police headquarters, where an intoxilyzer test showed he was over the legal alcohol limit allowed when driving.

Officers learned the driver was a prohibited driver, and on an undertaking with a condition not to consume alcohol.

Besides impaired driving, the suspect was charged with blowing over the legal limit, driving under suspension and failing to comply with an undertaking.

Greater Sudbury Police now release the names of impaired drivers. These press releases can be found by going to www.gsps.ca.

  • I can respect that.

  • Good post and responsible. I support your policy.

  • In the media, it is imperative to follow up on every name we publish. As an independent information source (we don't work for the police) we have to report on the whole story. If a person is charged, and we publish his or her name, we need to ensure that the charges did indeed stick in court. Sometimes they do and sometimes they don't, and there can be a lengthy wait time to find out the end result. Northern Life has a small staff of reporters and doesn't have a full-time court reporter, which is why we have to limit the names we publish. High-profile cases are usually what we cover at the moment. That said, want to find out the names of those charged? Go to gsps.ca.

  • Now billybooby, How can a person drive the wrong way on Bancroft? I guess anyway is the wrong way. Why would a person be in that sesspool area in the first place. Just asking bubba.

  • Why does N.L. name the Dr. who is only charged but people can't name the guy charged with impaired driving??? Seems we have two sets or rules in Sudbury. Same when the police officer was only charged and not convicted.
