OPP finds teen's body in river

OPP divers found the body of the missing 14-year-old boy in the Vermillion River at 12:53 p.m. June 27, according to Greater Sudbury Fire Services Platoon Chief David Wickenden.

UPDATED June 27 at 1 p.m.

Emergency personnel are continuing to search for a 14-year-old boy who may have drowned in the Vermillion River in the Capreol area June 26.

 

“Police, fire and ambulance attended the scene” shortly after 4 p.m. June 26, when the boy reportedly fell into the water, according to Greater Sudbury Police Insp. Dan Markiewich.

 

Crews are still on the scene, conducting a “full-scale ground and water search.” 

 

Community members have also gathering around the edge of the police tape, waiting for any news.

 

The shores of Green Lake, which the Vermillion River empties into, have been searched as well.

 

The search includes search and rescue officials, Greater Sudbury Fire Services' water rescue division and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) helicopter. The OPP dive team is on its way to the scene as well.

 

The public is being asked by Greater Sudbury Police to avoid the area. Anyone with information is asked to contact the police service at 705-675-9171.
