Renee Sweeney's murderer still at large

By: Sudbury Northern Life Staff

Today (Jan. 27) marks the 14-year anniversary of the murder of Renee Sweeney, an unsolved case that will be featured in a new book being published in England.

That book will be primarily distributed in Europe. The book is about unsolved murder cases, and it will feature the Sweeney case and composite drawings of the suspect.

On the morning of Jan. 27, 1998, Greater Sudbury Police responded to a call at the Adults Only Video on Paris Street and arrived on a grisly scene. Sweeney, 23 at the time, an employee at the store, was found stabbed to death.

To this day, the search for her killer continues.

More than 1,800 possible suspects have been eliminated, the majority through DNA comparison.

In 2011, about 30 new tips were received. Quite a few tips came by way of the RCMP's Most Wanted website, where the case and suspect composites are featured, according to Greater Sudbury Police Service.

A few calls have been received this year from former residents of Sudbury who have moved out to areas of western Canada and the United States.

They remember the composite sketch of the Sweeney suspect and have contacted police about a picture/composite of a suspect in their area that looks similar, according to police.

The case is also on Facebook, where a number of people have offered their condolences and have, in some cases, provided tips that are all followed up on by police.

Police have been working closely with the RCMP and FBI who are providing assistance in fingerprint and DNA comparisons, as well as profiling the type and tendencies of a person who would commit a violent homicide such as this.

The case continues to be televised in re-runs of Crime Files. This show regularly generates tips from viewers.

A $25,000 reward continues to be offered for any assistance in the identification of the person who committed this murder.
