Six alleged female sex trade workers have been charged with communication for the purpose of prostitution, following a sweep by Greater Sudbury Police Service's community response unit.

Three of these females also face charges of breaching their probation orders.

Five men were also arrested and charged with communicating for the purposes of prostitution in relation to obtaining the services of a sex trade worker.

On Feb. 8-9, members of the unit, with the assistance of members of uniform patrol and rural squad, conducted enforcement initiatives in response to community concerns relating to street-level prostitution.

Enforcement was conducted in the areas of Kathleen and Elgin Street.

While conducting this initiative, a 20-year-old woman, who was wanted on an outstanding warrant for failing to attend, was also arrested.

Another woman known to police was observed by officers to be breaching conditions of a previous release and was also apprehended and charged for breach of recognizance and breach of probation.

Most of those who were arrested for prostitution-related offences are offered post-charge diversion by way of the “John School” or “Jane Diversion.”

Both of these diversion programs are offered in hopes of curbing the behaviour of the offenders in the future, according to police.
