Greater Sudbury Police Service continued to hand out stunt driving charges on May 21, and is warning residents to slow down or face a possible six demerit points, a minimum $2,000 fine and a possible two-year licence suspension.

Greater Sudbury Police Service's traffic management unit on May 21 was conducting community patrols is the area of Municipal Road 80 and Notre Dame Avenue at about 5 p.m. While patrolling, officers noted a north-bound Honda Civic travelling at an extremely high rate of speed.

An investigation revealed that the operator of the Honda Civic was going 140 km/h in a posted 80-km/h zone. The vehicle and driver were subsequently stopped by officers and charged with racing a motor vehicle and speeding 60 km/h over posted limit.

The driver’s car was removed from the scene and held for seven days. The driver will be making a court appearance in June of 2012 to answer to the charges.

With the onset of summer weather, the Greater Sudbury Police Service is reminding the public that stunt driving is a serious offence and will also dramatically affect your insurance rates and your ability to drive in Ontario. There is also potential for those charged with stunt driving to receive up to six months jail.
